What is a thriller film?

A thriller film/genre is the feeling of which creates a whole range of emotions through one scene such as anxiety, fear, and tension. This is to ensure that the audiences motions and mood is unclear and the music will occasionally rise to create suspense.

Types and Conventions of Thrillers

There are a variety of different sub-genres in the thriller industry, which needs a specific scene in order to make it the genre that is trying to be portrayed.

Homicides- This is a genre of a thriller which focuses on the cause of the killing instead of actually seeing it take place, and the main idea is that they can resolve the crime issues before more people die.

Psychological- This is all about the idea that a certain character is in a situation in which could lead to chaos and it normally ends in them solving mysteries and using there mental skills over physical to ensure that they can resolve the issue. This further includes places like a bathroom, female protagonist, isolation and an antagonist man.

Spy and Action- This is different to psychological as psychological has knives whilst the knives are replaced with guns. Spy thrillers tend to focus more cautiously within the action and with a male antagonist, who are known to the audience, while you have the protagonists which normally are incapable of doing there role properly and efficiently.

Erotic- Erotic is a theme that has a variety of different emotions which play through the characters minds and gets more dramatic as the film continues. It is the idea of a certain character who has an affair with someone and it slowly gets revealed and could lead to some other characters being either hurt or possibly killed. This also adds to the idea of isolation of the character who wants to destroy there previous partners life and is an obsession to get them back no matter the cost.

Contained- Contained thrillers is a type of thriller which usually will mean that they will have everything recorded in a specific location in which will remain one location for the entire shooting. This is different than any other sub genre as this is the only one where people are trapped in a certain place for the whole film and try and escape without being killed or left there to die. The lighting also is the same by making sure that it is a dark lighting to create suspense or tension for the audience.

Crime- A crime thriller is a thriller which deals with the impact of a crime on the protagonist character. This generally is connected with the criminal who committed the crime and is the detectives mission is to find him before he or she kills any more. With this sub genre, this includes specific details and story in which can make it a crime scene rather than any other scene, it will need to focus on finding evidence from murder to murder, ensuring that the music is at a slow pace and gradually increasing which creates that suspense that at any moment anything can happen.

Claude- Levi Strauss

Claude Levi Strauss is a French anthropologist, who have came up with a theory known as "binary opposites", which entails that the majority of the

films we watch contain "binary oppositions" to help audiences understand the narrative and to create more conflict/excitement, it also help to thicken the plot and introduce contrast. For example Claude was trying to portray the fact how in a horror film it could potentially be humans against the supernatural, in a superhero film, that there could be good against the evil. Although this is what Claude has told, sometimes the image of the binary opposite may not be as clear to some people, for example, people may have a different opinion on a superhero, in which they believe to be a bad character, while others may see it as a good character, and since everyone has there own perspective, it changes the way in which the characters are actually meant to be.
